Highlights of 2024: Celebrating Poetry Across Long Island and Beyond

Black History Month and Women’s History Month Tributes

  • In February, Cheryl Williams participated in a Black History Month Poetry Reading at Epic Long Island. Her poignant poems The Survivor, Shades of Gray, and Human resonated deeply with the audience.
  • In March, during Women’s History Month, Cheryl was honored by Epic Long Island Day Hab for her contributions in empowering others through her work. She debuted her poem Phenomenal Me, celebrating women’s strength and resilience.

Major Awards for Cheryl’s Children’s Books

  • Cheryl’s children’s book, A Lesson A Day: A Child’s Way, won First Place in Children’s Poetry and an Honorable Mention in Fiction – Fables at The BookFest 2024 Awards.
  • Her second children’s book, The Brightest Star That Shines Tonight, was published in the summer of 2024 and was dedicated to the memory of her late mother. This book teaches children how to navigate the challenges of loss through narrative poetry.

National Poetry Month at Walt Whitman Birthplace

  • In April, Cheryl celebrated National Poetry Month at the iconic Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum, sharing her poetry and fostering a love for literature. She also served as a judge for the Walt Whitman 38th Annual Student Poetry Contest, encouraging young poets to share their voices.

  • Cheryl’s poetry reached new audiences through events like:
    • A back-to-school feature in Seasons Magazine in August.
    • The Books and Bites event at James Joyce Restaurant in September, organized by the Long Island Authors community.
    • Her October event, “The Healing Powers of Poetry,” at The Inn at Fox Hollow, where she used poetry to educate and inspire on topics like breast cancer awareness.

Memorable Readings and Community Engagement

  • Cheryl hosted several impactful poetry readings, including:
    • “Take Your Child to Work Day” in August, where she inspired young minds with giveaways and engaging poems.
    • Her final event of the year, “Enlightening The Mind,” at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum in November. The event featured guest speakers like Licensed Therapist Bernadette Barto and Dr. Keith Durante, alongside Cheryl’s touching poem I Remember You, dedicated to her late mother.
